Rayon vs Cotton: Which Should You Choose?

Both are soft, breathable, and beginner-friendly — which is exactly why they get confused for each other. Here's how they actually differ, and how to pick the right one for your project.

What they're made of

Cotton is a natural fiber, spun directly from the cotton plant. Rayon is technically a "regenerated" fiber — made from wood pulp (usually eucalyptus or bamboo) that's chemically processed into a fabric-ready fiber. It's not synthetic, but it's not quite as "natural" as cotton either.

Drape and feel

This is the biggest practical difference. Cotton has more body and structure — it holds a shape and creases easily. Rayon has a fluid, almost silk-like drape that moves with the body, which is why it's so popular for dresses and blouses that need to flow rather than hold a crisp line.

Breathability

Both breathe well, but rayon is more absorbent than cotton, which can make it feel cooler in hot weather — though it also means it can hold onto moisture longer, so it's not always the best choice for activewear.

Care

Cotton is generally low-maintenance — machine washable, tolerant of heat. Rayon is more delicate: it can shrink or lose shape in hot water and is best hand-washed or laundered on a gentle, cold cycle. Always check the care note on the specific product before you commit.

Which should you choose?

  • Choose cotton for shirts, quilting, structured garments, or anything that needs to hold its shape.
  • Choose rayon for flowing dresses, blouses, and drapey silhouettes where movement matters more than structure.
